For this reason blackcurrant smoothie is an ideal drink for cold weather (providing that you use frozen berries). We usually have our freezer packed with all kinds of berries that we pick in a nearby forest or in my parents-in-law’s garden. In other words, we rarely buy berries from the store, which makes us quite lucky.

Picking blackcurrants is quite arduous and requires a lot of patience, but I must confess that picking blackcurrants is like a meditation session for me. I simply get myself a small bench to sit on and forget about everything in the world for a few hours. Sitting there, my mind somehow switches off all the buzz constantly going on in my head and I simply concentrate on picking the berries. I assume many people could find the picking process boring, but it helps me find a peace of mind.

Now, let’s get back to the recipe. If you want a sweeter version of this smoothie, try adding some raw honey or other sweeteners, such as agave or yac√≥n syrup. I personally prefer my smoothie to be a bit acidic so I usually skip sweeteners. You decide.

Simple blackcurrant smoothie recipe with apple and banana. This blackcurrant smoothie will energize you and fill you with vitamins and powerful antioxidants.

  • 200 g blackcurrants (fresh or frozen)
  • 1 banana
  • 1 apple
  • 150 ml water or juice
  • 1-2 tbsp honey or syrup (optional)


  • Whizz all the ingredients in a blender or food processor until smooth. Pour into a glass and serve straight away.

If you don’t have fresh or frozen blackcurrants, you can substitute the berries with Blackcurrant Powder.
